At the end of January 2025, the number of unemployment in Spain registered with the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) increased by 38,725, marking a 1.51% rise compared to December. This uptick is notably lower than the usual increase observed in the first month of the year.
However, compared to January 2024, unemployment has decreased by 168,417 people, or 6.08%. When broken down by sectors, the construction sector saw a decrease of 4,527 people (-2.28%), while the industrial sector recorded a smaller drop of 241 people (-0.12%). The category of individuals without prior employment also saw a reduction of 2,201 people (-0.93%).
In terms of gender, female unemployment rose by 31,869 women (2.08%) to reach 1,563,431. Despite this increase, it remains the lowest level for women in the last 17 years in a January report. Male unemployment grew by 6,856 men (0.67%), bringing the total to 1,036,012. When comparing year-on-year, female unemployment has dropped by 95,446 women (-5.75%), and male unemployment has fallen by 72,971 men (-6.58%).
Youth unemployment also saw a slight rise in January, with 2,563 more individuals under 25 becoming unemployed compared to December. This represents a 1.38% increase, bringing the total to 188,364, the lowest number ever recorded for this group in a January report.
Regionally, unemployment decreased in the Balearic Islands but rose in other autonomous communities, with Andalusia seeing the largest increase (11,903 people), followed by Madrid (3,541) and the Valencian Community (3,078).
Regarding job contracts, a total of 1,213,905 contracts were registered in January, with 41.87% being indefinite contracts.
Unemployment benefits in December 2024 reached 1,788,185 beneficiaries, with the system’s coverage rate standing at 74.51%, the highest since 2010. The average monthly benefit per person was 1,192.3 euros, an 11.4% increase compared to December 2023.
