Shop price inflation in the UK has dropped to its lowest level in more than three years as retailers ramp up discounts to attract consumers amid increasing competition. According to the latest data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC)-NielsenIQ Shop Price Index, overall prices are now 0.6% lower than they were a year ago, marking a decline from August’s deflation rate of 0.3%.
The figures reveal that non-food items have seen a significant decrease in prices, now 2.1% cheaper compared to the same period last year, down from a 1.5% deflation rate in August. This marks the lowest inflation rate for non-food items since March 2021, with furniture and clothing experiencing the most substantial price drops as retailers employ aggressive discount strategies to entice shoppers.
Despite the overall decline, food inflation has seen a slight increase, rising to 2.3% from 2% in August. This uptick can be attributed to poor harvests in key producing regions, which have resulted in higher prices for essential cooking oils and sugary products. Additionally, fresh food inflation accelerated to 1.5%, up from 1% the previous month, further complicating the shopping landscape.
Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the BRC, commented on the current market dynamics, stating, “September was a good month for bargain hunters as big discounts and fierce competition pushed shop prices further into deflation.” The overall trends indicate a continued effort by retailers to respond to changing consumer behaviors and economic pressures, creating a competitive environment aimed at driving sales while managing inflationary pressures on food products. As retailers navigate these challenges, consumers may benefit from the lower prices across a range of non-food items.
