UK GDP Growth Revised Downward to 0.5% in Q2 2024

The latest estimates indicate that the UK gross domestic product (GDP) experienced a growth of 0.5% in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024, revised down from an initial estimate of 0.6%. While the overall quarterly trajectory of real GDP remains largely consistent with previous years, revisions have adjusted the figures down by 0.1 percentage points for both the first quarter of 2023 and the second quarter of 2024.

In light of preannounced revisions to growth figures for 2022, the overall GDP growth for 2023 has been revised upward to an estimated 0.3%, compared to the initial estimate of 0.1%. This revision was primarily due to updated data derived from the income approach to measuring GDP, reflecting a more accurate economic landscape.

In terms of sector performance, the services sector recorded a notable growth of 0.6% in Q2 2024, with broad-based growth contributing to this increase. However, this growth was partially declining in both the production and construction sectors, highlighting the uneven nature of the recovery across different industries.

Additionally, real households’ disposable income (RHDI) is going to have risen by 1.3% in the second quarter, a decrease from the 1.6% growth observed in the previous quarter. This shift suggests a slight easing in consumer financial conditions, which may influence spending behaviors going forward.

Furthermore, the household saving ratio has shown an increase, estimated at 10.0% in the latest quarter, compared to 8.9% in the first quarter of 2024. This uptick in savings could indicate a more cautious approach to spending among households amidst evolving economic conditions.

As the UK navigates these fluctuating conditions, monitoring sector performance and consumer behavior will be crucial for understanding the broader implications for economic recovery and growth in the coming quarters.
