Japan is accelerating its defense capabilities with the development of a powerful new anti-ship missile designed to counter China’s growing ambitions in the region and reinforce control over contested waters. This strategic move comes as concerns rise over territorial disputes, particularly regarding the Senkaku Islands.
According to a recent report by Naval News, Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) is ready to conduct the first test launch of the missile, officially named the “New Anti-Ship Missile for the Defense of Remote Islands,” in fiscal year 2027. This missile is integral to Japan’s broader strategy to enhance its standoff capabilities in the face of escalating tensions.
The new anti-ship missile is equipped with KHI’s state-of-the-art small fuel-efficient turbofan engine, the KJ300, enabling it to be launched from a safe distance outside the range of enemy threats. The Japanese Defense Ministry has allocated a significant US$223 million contract to KHI for research and development of the missile over the next four years.
With an impressive anticipated range of 2,500 kilometers, the missile could reach inland China from western Japan, significantly boosting Japan’s operational reach. This development aligns with Japan’s Defense Buildup Program, which emphasizes the creation of longer-range, low radar cross-section, and higher mobility missiles.
The successful rollout of this missile will empower Japan to engage targets at extended distances, enhancing its defense of remote islands and projecting power across the region, potentially covering areas deep within China.
Strategically, the Nansei/Ryukyu Islands hold vital military significance for both Japan and China, serving as crucial logistics, defense, and power projection points. As Japan moves forward with its defense enhancements, the intricate dynamics of the US-Japan alliance and ongoing technical challenges may impact the trajectory of its military ambitions.
