In January 2025, Italian employment figures saw a notable rise, with an increase in the number of employed individuals, while both the unemployed and inactive populations declined.
On a monthly basis, employment rose across all genders and age groups, except for those aged 35-49, where employment numbers decreased. The overall employment rate climbed to 62.8%, up by 0.4 percentage points. This increase was particularly noticeable among men and women, and all age groups except for those in the 35-49 bracket.

Unemployment also showed positive trends, with a decrease of 0.6% (a reduction of 9 thousand people). The drop was among men and all age groups, except for those aged 25-34, where unemployment increased. The overall unemployment rate fell to 6.3%, down by 0.1 percentage points, while the youth unemployment rate dropped to 18.7%, a 0.3 percentage point decline.
The number of inactive people also saw a reduction in January, falling by 1.2% (146 thousand fewer individuals). This decline was particularly evident among men, women, and those aged 15-34 and 50 and over. However, the number of inactive people aged 35-49 increased. The inactivity rate decreased to 32.9%, down by 0.4 percentage points.
Looking at the quarterly data for November 2024 to January 2025, compared to the previous quarter (August-October 2024), employment grew by 0.4%, adding 85 thousand people to the workforce. On the other hand, the number of unemployed individuals rose by 1.4% (22 thousand more), while the number of inactive people aged 15-64 decreased by 0.8% (99 thousand fewer).
Year-on-year, employment increased by 2.2%, with 513 thousand more people employed compared to January 2024. This growth was seen across both genders and among individuals aged 25-34 and 50 and over, although employment decreased for other age groups. Over the year, the employment rate increased by 1.0 percentage points, accompanied by a significant drop in both unemployment (-10.7%) and inactivity (-1.3%) rates.
