Heavy snow across Japan’s northern region on Tuesday (Dec 31) led to the cancellation of dozens of flights, disrupting the travel plans of thousands of families returning home to celebrate the New Year.

Japan Airlines (JAL) announced it had canceled 42 flights, affecting 6,398 passengers, by early afternoon. These cancellations primarily impacted services to and from Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. In addition, its main competitor, All Nippon Airways (ANA), also scrapped 14 flights, affecting 800 passengers. Both airlines warned of potential further delays and cancellations due to ongoing bad weather.

At Hokkaido’s main airport, passengers found themselves stranded, with long lines forming at ticket counters as travelers scrambled to secure alternative flights. Some passengers faced the possibility of ringing in the New Year in the airport’s departure lounge. “It was great to see snow, but I didn’t think I’d be trapped here,” one traveler attempting to return to Okinawa in the south told broadcaster HTB. “I don’t know what to do. I might have to stay at the airport tonight.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that Hokkaido and northern coastal areas were experiencing strong winds and heavy snow, with over 20cm of snow recorded in some areas since Monday. The snowfall was heavy on Tuesday morning, and continued snow is going through New Year’s Day.

This winter weather follows an exceptionally warm year for Japan. The summer of 2024 was the hottest on record, tying with 2023, and autumn was the warmest since records began 126 years ago. Notably, Mount Fuji’s famous snowcap, typically visible by October, was absent until early November, marking the latest appearance in recorded history.
