Germany’s inflation rate, based on the year-on-year change in the consumer price index (CPI), remained steady at 2.3% in February 2025, matching January’s rate. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), food prices saw a more significant increase, while service prices continued to rise, contributing to inflation. Conversely, energy prices had a downward impact on overall inflation.
Month-on-month, consumer prices rose by 0.4% in February 2025. The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP), which adjusts for differences in national inflation measures, showed a year-on-year rise of 2.6% in February, slightly down from the provisional result of 2.8%. Month-on-month, the HICP rose by 0.5%, slightly lower than the provisional figure of 0.6%.
A closer look at energy prices reveals a 1.6% drop in February compared with the same month in 2024. This was consistent with declines observed in January and December 2024. Motor fuels, household energy, and heating oil saw price reductions of up to 6.9%. However, natural gas and district heating prices rose, with increases of 2.0% and 9.7%, respectively.
Food prices, on the other hand, surged by 2.4% year-on-year in February 2025, a marked acceleration from January’s 0.8%. The rise was particularly driven by substantial price hikes in edible fats and oils, including butter, which saw a dramatic 27.9% increase. Fruit, vegetables, and dairy products also experienced above-average price increases, with fruit prices rising by 4.0% and vegetables by 3.9%.
Excluding energy and food prices, Germany’s core inflation rate stood at 2.7%, further highlighting the pressure on consumer spending in other areas. Overall, inflation remains above average across a variety of product categories.
This underscores the ongoing challenges for consumers and highlights the complex nature of inflation in Germany’s economy.
